Gandhi Phone Home

Gandhi made ahimsa (non-violence, non-injury) the centerpiece of his understanding of Hinduism. Unfortunately, not everybody agreed; he was murdered by a Hindu nationalist with a fundamentalist take on Hinduism.

As the reaction to this movie shows, Hindu fundamentalism is alive and kicking. Yes, Islam is not the only religion with an active fundamentalist streak.

How can religion teach people to ignore and deny their feelings? I don't get that.

Regardless if the Hindu religion has a fundamentalist streak (every religion can or does have those few retards that take it too far), it is still the best religion because of its take on animal rights. Ehehem, please let me recite some of Gandi’s best quotes:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated.”

“I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.” - A-freaking-men! Where is the humanity?

“I feel that spiritual progress does demand at some stage that we should cease to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants.”

“I do not regard flesh-food as necessary for us at any stage and under any clime in which it is possible for human beings ordinarily to live. I hold flesh-food to be unsuited to our species.”

Agreed. Meat is not necessary to live or thrive, thus it is a luxury. And I cannot find ANY justification in causing pain and suffering (a by-product of the factory farming industry) to anything or anyone for a simple luxury.

GANDI ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

well it's the best source of natural protein...

so unless you want us to ingest artificial, man-made, probably steroid-induced protein...

let us keep the meat.

you're barking up the wrong tree with this one, believe me, i know.

; )

but do agree, cruelty is not necessary.

I have never in my life heard of man-made protein...how one would go about doing this. The only thing that I can think of is a cutting edge technology where scientists are growing cow muscle cells (meat) in a laboratory- which does not appeal to me, or anyone I know at all. The vegans/and vegetarians I know get their protein from all natural, preservative free, unprocessed legumes, grains, and vegetables. The processed foods you may be referring to is tofu, which if not a staple of a vegan diet. Tofu is minimally processed, and contains all 8 essential amino acids.

And speaking of, "artificial, man-made, probably steroid-induced protein..." let’s talk about what is really in the meat we eat. Steroids are often used to bulk up the meat on farm animals in the name of profit. Every time you eat meat, you run the risk of ingesting steroids.

Antibiotics are used to keep the animals free of disease, except now, bacteria are mutating and becoming immune to them. Antibiotics are being rendered ineffective, the more they are used, the less effective they will be. We, as humans, eat this animal meat and ingest the antibiotic. This causes bacteria to become immune to antibiotics and contributes to creating the "super bugs" we now face today.

Finally, to answer your question, according to the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS), soy protein has a 1.0- the highest possible score- thus just as good a source of protein as beef (minus all the fat, cholesterol, and steroids, and most importantly, cruelty).

i didn't ask a question.

it seems you've done your research, i congratulate you.

i've also done my share of research...just one point, soy has been found to, in some cases, cause different types of cancers, when used in excess and for long periods of time.

but it's okay, we'll have cancer but the animals will be saved.

i'm not saying torture the animals. i'm saying you'll never get everyone to give up all animal products. i, for one, would not give up meat.

I too have read that study. If thats true, its sucks, but there are plenty of other protien sources. I can also point out the ginourmous amount of health probelms related to eating meat. I do not think that we should have cancer in order to save animals- and I would never imply that.

I also do not believe that everyone will give up animal products. But if I (and other activists) can influence just a few people to stop eating meat and/or buy only meat from a humane farmers (which is few and far between) than I feel like it makes a difference. Just lowering the demand for these products prevents pain and suffering.

Bottom line- you can get protien from a source that contributes to cruelty and protien from a source that does not (and I am not just talking about soy). And if both souces are equally as good for you, how can you pick the one that causes suffering?
